RESEARCH METHOD VERSUS METHODOLOGY


It seems appropriate at this juncture to explain the difference
between research methods and research methodology. Research methods
may be understood as all those methods/techniques that are used for
conduction of research. Research methods or techniques, thus, refer to
the methods the researchers use in performing research operations. In
other words, all those methods which are used by the researcher during
the course of studying his research problem are termed as research
methods. Since the object of research, particularly the applied research,
is to arrive at a solution for a given problem, the available data and the
unknown aspects of the problem have to be related to each other to make
a solution possible. Keeping this in view, research methods can be put
into the following three groups:
1. In the first group we include those methods which are
concerned with the collection of data. These methods will be
used where the data already available are not sufficient to
arrive at the required solution;
2. The second group consists of those statistical techniques
which are used for establishing relationships between the
data and the unknowns;
3. The third group consists of those methods which are used to
evaluate the accuracy of the results obtained.
21 Research methods falling in the above stated last two groups are
generally taken as the analytical tools of research.
Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research
problem. It may be understood as a science of studying how research is
done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are generally
adopted by a researcher in studying his research problem along with the
logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher to know not only
research methods/techniques but also the methodology. Researchers not
only need to know how to develop certain indices or tests, how to
calculate the mean, the mode, the median or the standard deviation or
chi-square, how to apply particular research techniques, but they also
need to know which of these methods or techniques, are relevant and
which are not, and what would they mean and indicate and why.
Researchers also need to understand the assumptions underlying various
techniques and they need to know the criteria by which they can decide
that certain techniques and procedures will be applicable to certain
problems and others will not. All this means that it is necessary for the
researcher to design his methodology for his problem as the same may
differ from problem to problem. For example, an architect, who designs a
building, has to consciously evaluate the basis of his decisions, i.e., he
has to evaluate why and on what basis he selects particular size, number
and location of doors, window and ventilators, uses particular materials
and not others and the like. Similarly, in research the scientist has to
expose the research decisions to evaluation before they are implemented.
He has to specify very clearly and precisely what decisions he selects and
why he selects them so that they can be evaluated by others also.
From what has been stated above, we can say that research
methodology has many dimensions and research methods do constitute a
part of the research methodology. The scope of research methodology is
wider than that of research methods. Thus, when we talk of research
22 methodology we not only talk of the research methods but also consider
the logic behind the methods we use in the context of our research study
and explain why we are using a particular method or technique and why
we are not using others so that research results are capable of being
evaluated either by the researcher himself or by others. Why a research
study has been undertaken, how the research problem has been defined,
in what way and why the hypothesis has been formulated, what data
have been collected and what particular method has been adopted, why
particular technique of analyzing data has been used and a host of
similar other questions are usually answered when we talk of research
methodology concerning a research problem or study.
Research and Scientific Method
For a clear perception of the term research, one should know the
meaning of scientific method. The two terms, research and scientific
method, are closely related. Research, as we have already stated, can be
termed as “an inquiry into the nature of, the reasons for, and the
consequences of any particular set of circumstances, whether these
circumstances are experimentally controlled or recorded just as they
occur. Further, research implies the researcher is interested in more than
particular results; he is interested in the repeatability of the results and
in their extension to more complicated and general situations.” On the
other hand, the philosophy common to all research methods and
techniques, although they may vary considerably from one science to
another, is usually given the name of scientific method. In this context,
Karl Pearson writes, “The scientific method is one and same in the
branches (of science) and that method is the method of all logically
trained minds…….the unity of all sciences consists alone in its methods,
not its material; the man who classifies facts of any kind whatever, who
sees their mutual relation and describes their sequences, is applying the
Scientific Method and is a man of science.” Scientific method is the
23 pursuit of truth as determined by logical considerations. The ideal of
science is to achieve a systematic interrelation of facts. Scientific method
attempts to achieve “this ideal by experimentation, observation, logical
arguments from accepted postulates and a combination of these three in
varying proportions.” In scientific method, logic aids in formulating
propositions explicitly and accurately so that their possible alternatives
become clear. Further, logic develops the consequences of such
alternatives, and when these are compared with observable phenomena,
it becomes possible for the researcher or the scientist to state which
alternative is most in harmony with the observed facts. All this is done
through experimentation and survey investigations which constitute the
integral parts of scientific method.
Experimentation is done to test hypotheses and to discover new
relationships, if any, among variables. But the conclusions drawn on the
basis of experimental data are generally criticized for either faulty
assumptions, poorly designed experiments, badly executed experiments
or faulty interpretations. As such the researcher must pay all possible
attention while developing the experimental design and must state only
probable inferences. The purpose of survey investigations may also be to
provide scientifically gathered information to work as a basis for the
researchers for their conclusions.
The scientific method is, thus, based on certain basic postulates
which can be stated as under:
1. It relies on empirical evidence;
2. It utilizes relevant concepts;
3. It is committed to only objective considerations;
4.  It presupposes ethical neutrality, i.e., it aims at nothing but
making only adequate and correct statements about
population objects;
5. It results into probabilistic predictions;
24 6. Its methodology is made known to all concerned for critical
scrutiny and for use in testing the conclusions through
replication;
7. It aims at formulating most general axioms or what can be
termed as scientific theories.
Thus, “the scientific method encourages a rigorous, impersonal
mode of procedure dictated by the demands of logic and objective
procedure.” Accordingly, scientific method implies an objective, logical
and systematic method, i.e., a method free from personal bias or
prejudice, a method to ascertain demonstrable qualities of a phenomenon
capable of being verified, a method wherein the researcher is guided by
the rules of logical reasoning, a method wherein the investigation
proceeds in an orderly manner and a method that implies internal
consistency.  

Finding the Main Idea


How Can I Locate the Main Idea?
Once you can find the topic, you are ready to find the main idea. The main idea is the point of the paragraph. It is the most important thought about the topic.
To figure out the main idea, ask yourself this question: What is being said about the person, thing, or idea (the topic)?
The author can locate the main idea in different places within a paragraph. The main idea is usually a sentence, and it is usually the first sentence. The writer then uses the rest of the paragraph to support the main idea.
Let's use the paragraph below as an example. First find the topic, then look for the main idea.
Summer is a wonderful time to spend at West Beach. It is a beach with light- colored, soft sand. The coastline goes on for a long way and many people enjoy walking along it. Children like to play in the surf and walk along the rocks that are visible at low tide. This is a fun beach for people of all ages.
In this paragraph:   
  • THE TOPIC IS WEST BEACH
  • THE MAIN IDEA (WHAT THE WRITER IS SAYING ABOUT THE TOPIC) IS THAT SUMMER IS A WONDERFUL TIME AT WEST BEACH

Here is another example: 
The movie Apollo 13 was a blockbuster for the summer of 1995. It is an exciting story about space exploration. In the movie, the astronauts get in trouble while they are trying to return to Earth. People in the audience are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens. What makes it even more exciting is that it is a true story. 
In this paragraph: 
  • THE TOPIC IS THE MOVIE APOLLO 13
  • THE MAIN IDEA IS IN THE FIRST SENTENCE: APOLLO 13 WAS A BLOCKBUSTER FOR THE SUMMER OF 1995

While the main idea is usually in the first sentence, the next most common placement is in the last sentence of a paragraph. The author gives supporting information first and then makes the point in the last sentence.
   
Here's a paragraph we can use as an example. Try to locate the topic and the main idea.
Most teenagers and young adults do not know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. It is a big decision. There are a number of things you can do to narrow the choices. For example you can take an interest test, do some research on your own about a career, try volunteer work in the field in which you are interested, or "job-shadow", in which you spend a day with a person who is working in a field that interests you. These are just a few helpful ideas as you begin to choose a career.
 In this paragraph:
  • THE TOPIC IS JOBS OR CAREER CHOICES
  • THE MAIN IDEA IS A FEW IDEAS TO HELP THE READER CHOOSE A CAREER  

Finally, an author might put the main idea in the middle of a paragraph. The author will spend a few sentences introducing the topic, present the main idea, then spend the rest of the paragraph supporting it. This can make the main idea more difficult to find. 

See if you can find the topic and main idea in the paragraph below.

The United States seems to be in love with the idea of going out to eat. Because of this, a real variety of restaurants has come about specializing in all kinds of foods. McDonald's is the king of a subgroup of restaurants called fast-food restaurants. Chances are, no matter where you live, there is a McDonald's restaurant near you. There are even McDonald's in the Soviet Union. Now McDonald's is trying something new. It is called McDonald's Express and there is a test site in Peabody, Massachusetts. It is part of a Mobil gas station. This allows you to fill up with gas and fill up on food at the same time. What will they think of next?
In this paragraph: 
  • THE TOPIC IS MCDONALD'S 
  • THE MAIN IDEA IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARAGRAPH, IN THE THIRD SENTENCE: MCDONALD'S IS THE KING OF FAST FOOD

Cause and Effect Examples

Cause and effect is a relationship between events or things, where one is the result of the other or others. This is a combination of action and reaction.

Examples of Cause and Effect 

  • We received seven inches of rain in four hours. - The underpass was flooded.
  • I never brush my teeth. - I have 5 cavities.
  • Smoking cigarettes - Lung cancer
  • Many buffalo were killed. - Buffalo almost became extinct.
  • The streets were snow-packed and icy. - Cars needed more time to stop.
  • He broke his arm. - The doctor put it in a cast.
  • The boss was busy. - Her secretary took a message.
  • A basketball player was traveling. - The referee called a penalty.
  • I flipped the light switch on. - The light came on.
  • An oil spill - Many deaths to wildlife
  • Sedentary lifestyle - Childhood obesity

Cause and Effect Examples in Sentences 

  • When water is heated, the molecules move quickly, therefore the water boils.
  • A tornado blew the roof off the house, and as a result, the family had to find another place to live.
  • Because the alarm was not set, we were late for work.
  • The moon has gravitational pull, consequently the oceans have tides.
  • Since school was canceled, we went to the mall.
  • John made a rude comment, so Elise hit him.
  • When the ocean is extremely polluted, coral reefs die.
  • The meal we ordered was cheaper than expected, so we ordered dessert.
  • Since helium rises, a helium balloon floats.
  • There has been an increase in greenhouse gases, therefore global warming is happening.
  • Betty completed each task perfectly, therefore she was promoted.
  • Some believe dinosaurs died out because a large meteor hit the earth.
  • I had to get the mop since I spilled my juice.
  • Tsunamis happen when tectonic plates shift.
  • Fred was driving 75 in a 35 mile zone, therefore he got a speeding ticket.
  • Because of changes in classifications, Pluto is no longer a planet.
  • Maria didn’t follow the recipe correctly, so the cake did not come out as expected.
  • The weather forecast called for rain, so he took his umbrella.
  • Because of a price increase, sales are down.
  • Water is formed when two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom combine.
  • The baby was crying, so Dad picked him up.
  • I learned to play the drums quickly because I took lessons from a pro.
  • The batter couldn’t hit the softball because he didn’t keep his eyes on the ball.
  • When the manuscript is edited, the company will publish it.
  • Because the cat was frightened, he arched his back and fluffed his tail.
  • A peacock will spread his feathers so he will attract a female.
  • Since the electricity went out for most of the day, the ice cream in the freezer melted.
  • As the wind speed increases, the sail boat moves faster.
  • When nuclear fusion stops or starts, a star explodes.
  • Wind is produced when the surface of the Earth is heated unevenly.
  • Because of inflation, the dollar is worth less than before.
  • Since the refrigerator was practically empty, we had to go to the store.
Examples of cause and effect show how one thing can affect another.

SAT Reading Comprehension

Reading Comprehension (also known as Critical Reading) questions test your ability to understand a passage and answer questions on the basis of what is stated and implied in the passage. You need to read the passage first so that you can identify the main idea of the passage and appreciate features such as the author's tone and attitude as well as the organization of the passage. Scroll back to the relevant point in the text as you do each question.
Passages on the SAT vary in length from short paragraphs that take 3 minutes to read and answer two questions, to ones that take 15 minutes to read and answer 13 questions. One section will contain two related long passages. Mini tests 11 - 14 contain one paragraph reading comprehensions. Be sure to read the directions and the time allowed at the beginning of each of our mini tests.
There is no shortcut to improving your critical reading ability. Practice does help - but if you are making too many errors on our mini tests, consult your teacher or just choose some good books and get down to some serious reading.

Directions

The reading passage is accompanied by a set of questions based on the passage and any introductory material that is given. Answer the questions according to what is stated or implied in the passage.
In the case of a double comprehension:
The two passages are accompanied by questions based on the content of each and the relationship between them. Answer the questions on the basis of what is stated or implied in the reading extracts and any introductory material.

5 Essential Skills Needed for Reading Comprehension

Beginning around third or fourth grade, your child is expected to be able to read a passage of text, understand it and answer questions about it. Here are the five skills needed for reading comprehension.
  1. Making the Connection Between Letters and Sounds

    Once your child grasps the connection between letters (or groups of letters) and the sounds they typically make (phonics), he’ll be able to “sound out” words.
  2. Decoding the Text

    The process of sounding out words is also known as decoding. As decoding becomes faster and more automatic, your child can shift his focus from sounding out words individually to understanding the meaning of what he is reading.
  3. Recognizing Words

    The ability to read whole words by sight without sounding them out is called “word recognition.” This speeds up the rate at which your child can read and understand a passage of text. This can be a challenging step for kids with dyslexia. Average readers require four to 14 exposures to a word before it becomes a “sight word.” Students with dyslexia may need up to 40 exposures.
  4. Reading Fluently

    Once your child can recognize most words by sight and quickly sound out any unfamiliar words, he can be called a “fluent” reader. Fluent readers read smoothly at a good pace, and use good expression in their voice when reading aloud. Fluency is essential for good reading comprehension.

  5. Understanding the Text

    Fluent readers can remember what they’ve just read and relate the new material to what they already know. They can recall details if asked and summarize what they understood from the passage.

    Readers with dyslexia can struggle to decode individual words. They can also have a harder time remembering what they’ve read. This makes it tougher to complete the important process of understanding and applying their new knowledge to what they’ve already learned.

Teaching Reading Comprehension

As Steve mentioned on the Teaching Reading Page, comprehension is the only reason for reading. Without comprehension, reading is a frustrating, pointless exercise in word calling. It is no exaggeration to say that how well students develop the ability to comprehend what they read has a profound effect on their entire lives. A major goal of teaching reading comprehension, therefore, is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences they must have if they are to become competent and enthusiastic readers.
For many years, teaching reading comprehension was based on a concept of reading as the application of a set of isolated skills such as identifying words, finding main ideas, identifying cause and effect relationships, comparing and contrasting, and sequencing. Teaching reading comprehension was viewed as a mastery of these skills. Comprehension instruction followed what the study called mentioning, practicing, and assessing procedure where teachers mentioned a specific skill that students were to apply, had students practice the skill by completing workbook pages, then assessed them to find out if they could use the skill correctly. Instruction did little to help students learn how or when to use the skills, nor was is ever established that this particular set of skills enabled comprehension.

Research indicates that we build comprehension through the teaching of comprehension strategies and environments that support an understanding of text. It is important for educators and parents to teach children active strategies and skills to help them become active, purposeful readers. Teaching reading comprehension is an active process of constructing meaning, not skill application. The act of constructing meaning is:
  • Interactive – It involves not just the reader, but the text and the context in which reading takes place.
  • Strategic – Readers have purposes for their reading and use a variety of strategies as they construct meaning.
  • Adaptable – Readers change the strategies they use as they read different kinds of text or as they read for different purposes.


    What Do Good Readers Do?
  • Before reading, good readers tend to set goals for their reading.
  • During reading, good readers read words accurately and quickly, while dealing with meanings of words.
  • Good readers are selective as they read.
  • Good readers use their background knowledge (schema) to create mental images, ask questions, and make inferences. 
  • Good readers monitor their comprehension as they read.
    How Do Poor Readers Differ From Good Readers?
  • Poor readers do not have sufficient awareness to develop, select, and apply strategies that can enhance their comprehension.
  • Poor readers rarely prepare before reading.
  • During reading, poor readers may have difficulty decoding, reading too slowly, and lack fluency.
  • Poor readers often lack sufficient background knowledge and have trouble making connections with text.
  • Some poor readers are unaware of text organization.
  • After reading, poor readers do not reflect on what they have just read.

    Steve and I use the lessons found in Comprehension Connections by Tanny McGregor,Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller, and 7 Keys to Comprehension by Susan Zimmerman and Chryse Hutchins for teaching reading comprehension strategies.

    METACOGNITION & SCHEMA (BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE)
    Although "metacognition" and "schema" aren't comprehension strategies, they are very important for teaching reading comprehension strategies. John Flavell used the term “metacognition” in the 70’s and believed we were capable of monitoring our own thoughts. Simply put, metacognition means to think about your thinking. In her book,Comprehension Connections, Tanny McGregor uses a mathematical equation to teach this concept to her students that I’ve also used in my classroom: Text + Thinking = Real Reading
    When you read text and think at the same time you are “real reading”…or being metacognitive! In 7 Keys to Comprehension, Zimmerman & Hutchins define schema (background knowledge) as the meaning you get from a piece of literature that is intertwined with the meaning you bring to it. A layering occurs, a weaving of past and present, an amalgam of old and new ideas and experiences. When you read, sometimes you activate your schema or you build upon it. A previous student of mine described schema simply as “everything that is stuck in your brain”…I like that definition!
    As Tanny mentions in her book, it’s hard teaching reading comprehension strategies without teaching your children about metacognition and schema. Look for the activities that Steve and I use coming soon on the Comprehension Activities Page!

    MAKING CONNECTIONS
    Children make personal connections with the text by using their schema. There are three main types of connections we can make during reading:
  • Text-to-Self: Refers to connections made between the text and the reader's personal experience.
  • Text-to-Text: Refers to connections made between a text being read to a text that was previously read.
  • Text-to-World: Refers to connections made between a text being read and something that occurs in the world.
    CREATING MENTAL IMAGES (VISUALIZING)
    This strategy involves the ability of readers to make mental images of a text as a way to understand processes or events they encounter during reading. This ability can be an indication that a reader understands the text. Some research suggests that readers who visualize as they read are better able to recall what they have read than those who do not visualize.
    QUESTIONING
    This strategy involves readers asking themselves questions throughout the reading of text. The ability of readers to ask themselves relevant questions as they read is especially valuable in helping them to integrate information, identify main ideas, and summarize information. Asking the right questions allows good readers to focus on the most important information in a text.
    INFERRING
    Authors do not always provide complete descriptions of, or explicit information about a topic, setting, character, or event. However, they often provide clues that readers can use to “read between the lines”—by making inferences that combine information in the text with their schema.
    EVALUATING (DETERMINING IMPORTANCE)
    Determining importance has to do with knowing why you’re reading and then making decisions about what information or ideas are most critical to understanding the overall meaning of the piece.
    SYNTHESIZING
    Synthesizing is the process of ordering, recalling, retelling, and recreating into a coherent whole the information with which our minds are bombarded everyday. Synthesizing is closely linked to evaluating. Basically, as we identify what’s important, we interweave our thoughts to form a comprehensive perspective to make the whole greater than just the sum of the parts.
